A Wedding Gift From Mother

Today, a joyous occasion took place as the couple exchanged vows and embarked on their journey of matrimony. The wedding festivities concluded with a heartfelt gesture from the bride’s mother, who presented her daughter with a brand new bank savings passbook containing a deposit of $1000.

With loving words, the mother advised her daughter, “My dear, keep this passbook as a cherished memento of your married life. Each time a happy and memorable event unfolds in your new journey, set aside some money and record the details beside the amount. The more significant the occasion, the more you may choose to save. As years pass, you will be able to reminisce on the shared happiness you both have experienced.”

Upon returning home, she excitedly shared her mother’s suggestion with her spouse. They both embraced the idea wholeheartedly and eagerly anticipated their next deposit.

As time went by, the passbook began to fill with moments that held special meaning to the couple:

  • On February 7th, they celebrated his first birthday after marriage, and $100 was joyfully recorded.
  • March 1st marked a milestone in her professional life, as she received a $300 salary raise.
  • They set aside $200 on March 20th for a memorable vacation together.
  • On April 15th, their joy multiplied as they discovered they were expecting a child, prompting a deposit of $2000.
  • June 1st brought a significant achievement for him—a well-deserved promotion, celebrated with a $1000 deposit.

However, as the years progressed, trivial disputes and arguments gradually crept into their relationship. Communication waned, and their once-thriving love seemed to have withered away. They found themselves regretting their decision to marry, convinced they had chosen the wrong person.

One day, she confided in her mother, saying, “Mom, we can no longer endure this. We have decided to divorce. I can’t fathom how I ever agreed to marry him.”

Her mother responded calmly, “If that is truly what you both desire, then go ahead. Do what you must. But before taking that step, do me one favor. Remember the savings passbook I gave you on your wedding day? Withdraw all the money and spend it. Erase any trace of this poor marriage.”

Taking her mother’s advice to heart, she proceeded to the bank, intending to close the account. While waiting in line, she couldn’t resist glancing at the passbook record. As she perused the entries, a flood of memories from their happier times overwhelmed her. Tears welled up in her eyes.

She left the bank and returned home, passbook in hand. As she handed it to her husband, she made a surprising request: “Before we proceed with the divorce, please spend the money from the passbook.”

Curiosity piqued, he too visited the bank the following day to cancel the account. While waiting in line, he took a moment to review the passbook record. As he perused the pages, a rush of nostalgia surged through him, reminding him of the cherished moments they had shared. Tears streamed down his face.

Returning home, he handed the passbook back to his wife. To her astonishment, she discovered a new deposit of $5000 and a heartfelt note beside the entry: “This is the day I realized the depth of my love for you throughout all these years. You have brought immeasurable happiness into my life.” Overwhelmed with emotion, they embraced and wept, placing the passbook back into the safe.

Marriage is a profound journey, not to be taken lightly, but rather appreciated for its beauty. Disagreements and arguments are natural, as two individuals with different upbringings, backgrounds, and beliefs come together. It is unrealistic to expect that every word spoken will be unquestioningly accepted by one’s spouse.

In moments of despair, it is crucial to reflect upon the good times and remember what initially brought the couple together.
