In nature, perfect coincidences depict the world’s beauty and awe. A murmuration, or flock of starlings, happened above the Costa Brava in northeastern Spain. This phenomenon is a sight to see, with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of birds moving and twisting in unison, morphing into bizarre patterns.

The starlings started to twirl and twist when a predator such as a falcon or a hawk was around, according to photographer Daniel Biber from Hilzingen, Germany. The starling cloud twisted and turned into a single massive bird, as if to declare to their tormentor, “we are larger than you.”

Mr. Biber won a prize in an international photography competition, but he didn’t realize he had obtained such outstanding photographs. I only noticed the starlings’ formation after looking at the photos on the computer, he said. “I was so focused on snapping shots that I missed the starlings creating a big bird in the sky.”

Mr. Biber’s perseverance paid off after failing to catch the starlings in flight. The starlings have always been a challenge for him to shoot. “I drove to the same area for four days in a row to catch them. I chose a foreground and background that matched their location in the scene.”
