Two dogs with facial de-formities have formed a deep bond after being adopted into the same family five years apart.
Picasso and Newt, both with unique facial characteristics, live with Liesl Wilhardt, the 53-year-old founder and director of Luvable Dog Rescue, on a 55-acre property in Eugene, Oregon. Picasso was adopted by Liesl in 2017 after his brother Pablo passed away. Four years later, in 2021, Newt joined the family. According to Liesl, the two dogs have since become inseparable.
Five-year-old Picasso was born with a condition called wrymouth, which causes one side of the jaw to grow unevenly, leading to a crooked appearance similar to a painting by Pablo Picasso, inspiring his name. This condition, though not painful, makes everyday life more challenging and decreases the chances of adoption.
Newt, on the other hand, lost his upper jaw after an accident where he was bitten by his mother. Despite this, he has adapted to his deformity.
“It was a miracle Picasso survived as a baby, as even feeding from his mother was difficult for him,” Liesl shared.
Both dogs now live happy lives, despite the physical challenges they’ve faced. Liesl notes that they have fully adapted and are in no discomfort.
“Picasso and Newt love people,” Liesl said. “They’re outgoing and love to greet others when we’re out in public. Most people do a double-take, staring as they try to make sense of what they’re seeing.”
Liesl expressed how their friendship blossomed over time, especially as Newt matured. “I love Picasso and Newt with all my heart. They are incredibly loving, happy, intelligent, and playful,” she shared.
Liesl often shares videos of the two dogs, capturing moments of them playing, hiking, and interacting on their farm. Picasso even has his own Instagram account, boasting nearly 400,000 followers.
In 2017, Liesl described Picasso as a “special dog with an exceptional temperament.” He is trained as a certified therapy dog and serves as an ambassador for Luvable Dog Rescue, helping those with disabilities or illnesses.
“I love him so much, and after everything he’s been through, I want the rest of his life to be amazing,” Liesl said.
