Born in February 1962 in Indiana as William, he entered a childhood defined by instability and hardship. His mother was just sixteen, his biological father troubled and destructive. By age two the parents had separated. Later, his biological father allegedly abducted and abused him, then vanished forever. His mother remarried and renamed him Bailey — and only at seventeen did he discover the truth about his birth.
Growing Up Under Fear
His new home brimmed with strict religious beliefs, fear, and judgment. He was taught to distrust “evil,” including women, and to accept violence as a norm. His stepfather once destroyed their TV, deeming it “Satanic.” From an early age he felt invisible — his mother seemingly siding with the man she married, even when witnessing him being hurt.
School brought no relief. He was bullied, mocked, physically abused by peers. Once taped shut during cross-country practice. Another time shoved into a locker. Yet even as a teenager, he clung to a fierce hope: “Watch — I’m going to make it.”
Anger, Trouble and a New Beginning
Teen years spiraled into arrests — more than twenty by some accounts — and jail visits. Burdened by pain and rage, he craved escape. In December 1982, he packed up and left Indiana for Los Angeles, determined to redefine himself far away from his past.
Music — His Escape and Weapon
Music had always called to him. From singing in church to playing piano, he found solace in song. In L.A., he formed the band AXL and took on a new name: the one he’d be known by forever.
By 1985, he co-founded a new rock band. Their 1987 debut album — initially humble — caught fire after hit songs and wild live shows resonated with a growing audience. The album went on to become the biggest-selling debut in U.S. history, propelling them into rock stardom.
