Wife of Missing High School Coach Speaks Out as Search Intensifies

The wife of high school football coach Travis Turner, 46, has made her first public statement since his disappearance, sharing an emotional message as law enforcement continues searching for him.

Turner, who coaches at Union High School in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, went missing shortly after officers attempted to visit his home as part of an ongoing inquiry. When police arrived, his family said he was not there, prompting a large-scale search involving K-9 units, drones, and rescue teams.

Authorities have since listed Turner as missing and sought for questioning in connection with an ongoing investigation. He disappeared just before his team prepared for a major playoff game.

Wife Issues Emotional Plea

Turner’s wife posted on Facebook late Friday night:

“As of right now, 10:25 PM, Travis is missing — and that’s all we know.
We love him and need him here with us. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with support.
Please keep praying that he comes home.”

She has expressed full belief in her husband, saying she does not believe the allegations connected to the investigation, adding:

“He’s a good dad and a good husband, and we want him home.
We are all just hanging in there until we get news.”

Last Known Location

Police say Turner was last seen walking into a wooded area near his home.
He was reportedly wearing:

  • A gray sweatshirt
  • Gray sweatpants
  • Glasses

Weather conditions have slowed parts of the search. Officer Jason Day told local media that while drones and search dogs have been used, helicopters were grounded due to poor weather on Saturday.

School District Responds

In a public statement, the school district confirmed Turner remains on leave:

“Coach Turner is on leave and is not permitted on school property or to have contact with students at this time. The division will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement.”

Superintendent Dr. Mike Goforth also emphasized that Turner’s leave is standard procedure during an external review and is not a determination of guilt.

Family’s Attorney Asks for Compassion

The family’s attorney, Adrian Collins, released a statement urging the public to avoid speculation:

“We remain prayerful for his safe return and for everyone affected by the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
Any claims should be handled through the proper legal process — not through rumor.
We ask the public and media for compassion, accuracy, and respect for the family’s privacy.”

A Well-Known Local Figure

Turner is widely known in the region’s sports community.
He was a standout quarterback in the 1990s, winning three state titles, and has been Union’s head coach since 2011. He is also a two-time Southwest Virginia Coach of the Year.

As the search continues, his family, students, and community members are waiting anxiously for updates, hoping for his safe return.
